Petrobras starts production at Búzios 6
The P-78 floating production, storage and offloading can produce up to 180,000 barrels per day and will increase the gas supply.

Petrobras has commenced oil and gas production from its newest floating production, storage, and offloading vessel (FPSO) P-78, also designated Búzios 6, in the Búzios field of the pre-salt Santos Basin off Brazil’s coast. This unit adds to the field’s existing infrastructure and increases installed capacity to about 1.15 million barrels of oil per day. The vessel’s daily output potential includes up to 180 000 barrels of oil and 7.2 million m³ of associated gas, marking a substantial enhancement to the company’s offshore production portfolio.
Strategic Role in Gas Supply Expansion
Beyond oil volumes, the Búzios 6 project distinguishes itself through expanded gas production and export capability. The development includes connection to the ROTA 3 gas pipeline, enabling up to 3 million m³ of natural gas per day to be supplied to Brazilian mainland markets. This supply pathway differentiates the project within the Brazilian offshore sector by directly integrating offshore gas output with onshore energy infrastructure, supporting domestic energy demand growth.
Engineering and Operational Efficiencies
The P-78 design reflects lessons learned from prior units in the pre-salt area, incorporating improved safety and reliability features through Petrobras’ PBRef (Basic Reference Project) framework. Contracting and construction strategies under the FORTALECE Program also aimed to elevate technical quality and efficiency, including a minimum 25 percent local content requirement and the fabrication of multiple topside modules in Brazil. These approaches enhance operational performance while supporting national industrial participation.
The platform integrates technologies focused on emissions reduction and energy efficiency, such as gas recovery systems, variable speed drives on rotating equipment, and energy integration between process streams. Smart well completion systems across the 13 connected wells support advanced production management, further improving operational differentiation versus conventional offshore projects.
Logistics and Commissioning Approach
The P-78 arrived in Brazil from Singapore with commissioning and operational personnel aboard, allowing substantial system commissioning progress en route and eliminating the need for a separate sheltered-water commissioning stop. This approach condensed project timelines and bolstered safety and readiness ahead of first production.
Positioning Within the Búzios Hub
As the seventh production unit in the Búzios field — Brazil’s largest in terms of reserves — the Búzios 6 development builds on record production levels previously achieved in the basin and underpins Petrobras’ broader objectives to increase total company output toward its 2026 targets. The cumulative production capacity from the Búzios cluster reinforces Petrobras’ competitive position in offshore oil and gas production at global scale.
This synthesis highlights the operational, technological, and infrastructure aspects of the Búzios 6 project that contribute to Petrobras’ competitive differentiation in deepwater oil and gas production.
