Natural Gas Supply Grid Integration Tracking

Equinor and Dutch energy company Eneco have executed a five-year supply agreement delivering natural gas coupled with digital emissions accounting to the Dutch gas grid. The operational framework balances grid volume requirements for residential and commercial energy distribution while applying traceable upstream greenhouse gas accounting directly to pipeline flows.

Operational Framework and Partner Responsibilities
Under the technical terms of the agreement, Equinor supplies approximately 9 TWh of natural gas annually, equivalent to roughly 0.9 billion cubic metres, sourced from production fields across the Norwegian continental shelf. Eneco takes delivery of the volumes into the national transmission system to support domestic heating and small-business supply networks. Deliveries commenced on 1 October 2026.

Supply reliability requires continuous physical balancing between offshore production facilities, subsea pipeline networks, and onshore Dutch injection points. The collaboration addresses the dual requirement of maintaining base-load fuel stability while establishing precise carbon accounting for grid operators navigating decarbonization mandates.

Digital Attribute Transfer and Verification Architecture
The contractual framework couples physical gas delivery with verified environmental attributes transferred through a digital platform operated by Attributes SA. This system tracks upstream greenhouse gas intensity from production through pipeline transport.

Attributes SA provides independent verification by cross-referencing emissions metrics against statutory operational data submitted to and published by Norwegian authorities. This architecture calculates upstream extraction and transport emissions to document that the supplied volume maintains an 11.8% lower greenhouse gas footprint than the prevailing average of gas entering the Dutch grid.

System Integration and Technical Insights
Grid operators require auditable provenance to allocate precise emissions factors across downstream customer portfolios without altering physical pipeline logistics. Digital tracking operates asynchronously with physical pipeline transport, linking verified emission data packets to custody-transfer metering points.

"The gas supplied by Equinor includes verified attributes through the Attributes platform, providing documented data on the origin of the gas and its upstream greenhouse gas footprint," stated Helle Østergaard Kristiansen, Senior Vice President for Gas & Power at Equinor.

"With this agreement, we will supply all our residential and small business customers in the Netherlands with Norwegian gas," stated Selina Thurer, Board Member Customers at Eneco.

The bilateral framework establishes a scalable operational model for incorporating upstream emissions data directly into existing natural gas grid infrastructure.
