Butterfly valves for hydrogen-based industrial processes
In hydrogen production, energy infrastructure, and chemical processing, reliable flow control components are required to safely manage gaseous media under varying operating conditions. Butterfly valves are widely used in these systems to isolate pipelines and regulate process flows.
GEMÜ has certified several butterfly valve series for operation with hydrogen, enabling their use in systems where hydrogen is handled in gaseous form. The certification applies to the valve series R480, R481, R487, R488 Victoria as well as R470, R471, R477 and R478 Tugela, covering all body configurations and pressure ratings.
Flow control in hydrogen production and distribution systems
The certified valves are designed for a wide range of applications across the hydrogen value chain. They can be used in electrolysis systems, fuel cell installations, and power-to-gas or power-to-liquid plants, where hydrogen must be safely transported and regulated.
In addition to hydrogen production systems, the valves are suitable for distribution networks, where they isolate pipeline sections or regulate the flow of gases and liquids. These functions are essential for maintaining stable operation and ensuring safe system control.
Integration into auxiliary process systems
Hydrogen production facilities often include auxiliary systems that support the overall process, such as cooling water circuits, gas treatment systems, and water management installations. The certified butterfly valves can also be deployed in these auxiliary processes to control associated media flows.
In power-to-liquid plants, the valves enable the precise regulation of hydrogen, CO₂, and synthesis gas in reactor systems and supply circuits, contributing to controlled chemical conversion processes.
Design features for hydrogen applications
The certified valve series meet key technical requirements for hydrogen-related processes. These include compact construction, short switching times, and compatibility with various process media used in energy and chemical applications.
With certification completed, the butterfly valve series can now be used in industrial installations where hydrogen is handled in gaseous form, providing operators with standardized components designed for reliable flow control in hydrogen systems.
