Fugro Supports Mubadala Energy Deepwater Gas Development Offshore North Sumatra

Fugro has secured a large contract from Mubadala Energy (South Andaman) RSC Limited to conduct advanced soil investigation services for the South Andaman Deepwater Development offshore Indonesia. The work will support the front-end engineering design, the engineering procurement and construction award, and the detailed subsea development design for the Tangkulo Field.

Offshore development concept and scope
The Tangkulo development concept includes subsea wells that will transport fluids via flowlines to a Floating Production Storage and Offloading vessel, where gas will be processed and exported. The processed gas is planned to be delivered through a dedicated pipeline to an onshore receiving facility in Aceh, Indonesia.

Key technology and methods that differentiate the service
Fugro’s role involves acquiring geo-data using deepwater autonomous underwater vehicles and the Seafloor Drill 2 robotic seabed drill. These integrated technologies allow for efficient collection of geotechnical data in ultra-deepwater conditions to minimize uncertainty and support critical development decisions. The approach reflects Fugro’s positioning in the offshore sector as a data-driven engineering partner capable of providing high-quality geohazard and geotechnical insight required for large-complex offshore gas developments.Relevance for deepwater project planning

This geo-data acquisition program is intended to reduce subsurface risk, improve project planning confidence, and support decision-making for subsea layout, foundation design, and infrastructure installation. The integration of AUV-based surveying and robotic seabed drilling addresses normal industry challenges in deepwater engineering, including soil characterization, geohazard identification, and operational verification of the seabed environment.

What this signals for the market
The project demonstrates the demand for advanced geotechnical and geo-data solutions in deepwater energy developments. By providing a combined digital, robotic, and deepwater data capability, Fugro positions itself as a specialized services provider focused on derisking offshore developments and enabling the transition from early design to engineering execution phases.
