Offshore Drilling Solids Control Shaker Screen Replacement
To streamline offshore operations, an exploration operator deployed SLB composite screens on a jackup rig operating in Norway to replace conventional metal shaker screens.

Offshore drilling campaigns require continuous, dependable solids control to process drilling fluids and separate drill cuttings efficiently. On a jackup rig stationed in the Norwegian North Sea, the drilling team operated shale shakers equipped with multi-deck separators. Rig personnel faced significant operational burdens during regular maintenance intervals. Heavy metal screens required substantial manual handling, which increased crew fatigue and elevated health, safety, and environmental risks during frequent screen changes and cell repair procedures. The operator required an alternative that reduced handling time, minimized physical strain, and eliminated the safety hazards associated with standard mesh repairs, all while maintaining strict solids separation efficiency, fluid processing capacity, and basket integrity under harsh offshore conditions.
Evaluation and Field Implementation
To validate operational viability without compromising drilling performance, SLB supplied Duraflo composite replacement screens for a comparative side-by-side field trial on the middle and bottom primary decks of the separator. Engineers mounted composite units and original equipment manufacturer metal units on the same shaker basket, periodically swapping deck positions to subject both types to identical flow rates and solids loadings.
The composite replacement units feature a high-strength polypropylene structural frame reinforced with internal steel rods and bonded to a multilayer separation mesh. This composite architecture significantly reduces the tare weight of each panel compared to traditional metal-backed screens. The lighter design, combined with an optimized mechanical locking mechanism, enabled rig crews to install and remove panels faster and with less physical exertion. Furthermore, damaged mesh cells were repaired using the integrated SNAP-LOK mechanical plug system, which seals punctured cells mechanically without requiring personnel to cut wire cloth or apply toxic chemical adhesives on the shaker deck.
Operational Results and Safety Improvements
Inspection throughout the offshore campaign revealed that the composite screens matched the baseline metal screens in fluid handling capacity, cuttings dryness, and overall operating life. The shaker basket showed zero irregular wear or structural damage, confirming mechanical compatibility. The reduced unit weight lowered manual handling requirements, while the glueless mechanical plugging method shortened maintenance intervals and eliminated chemical exposure on the rig floor.
