Tata Power Partners With BPCL For Mumbai Refinery Energy Infrastructure

Tata Power has entered an agreement with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited to design and construct dedicated 110 kV transmission infrastructure. This network supplies 90 MW of electrical power to the upcoming Petro Resid Fluidized Catalytic Cracking Unit at the Mumbai Refinery.

Industrial Operational Challenge
The Petro Resid Fluidized Catalytic Cracking Unit requires substantial electrical energy to support thermal and catalytic cracking processes designed to process 3 million metric tonnes per annum of heavy petroleum fractions. Continuous refining operations require uninterrupted power to sustain fluidization, process control, and high-pressure compression units. A localized high-voltage feed is necessary to isolate this concentrated industrial load from baseline municipal distribution and prevent voltage instability across the Trombay industrial zone.

Technical Solution and Engineering Division
Under the engineering scope, Tata Power manages the design, engineering, and installation of the 110 kV connectivity lines and downstream transmission infrastructure. Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited integrates the dedicated feed into the on-site electrical substation of the processing unit.

The technical architecture provides a continuous 90 MW capacity overhead and underground connection engineered for high reliability. This setup minimizes line losses and mitigates electrical harmonics generated by large motor drives. The joint project scope represents a combined capital outlay of approximately 250 crore rupees.

Deployment and Network Integration
Construction and integration work is scheduled across an estimated 24-month timeline, subject to statutory clearances and phased milestone delivery. The infrastructure directly links the refinery facilities to the regional high-voltage transmission network.

Beyond powering the new cracking unit, the project reinforces Tata Power’s transmission network across the Trombay industrial belt. This installation serves as an operational precursor to an additional 400 kV bulk transmission facility planned for deployment over a five-year horizon. That facility aims to expand power evacuation capacity, improve thermal loading limits, and support future industrial loads within the Mumbai metropolitan grid.

Operational Applications and Long-Term Impact
The high-voltage supply directly serves downstream refining equipment, gas concentration sections, and continuous catalyst regeneration circuits within the 14,203-crore-rupee processing complex.

By stabilizing utility supply at 110 kV, the project ensures uninterrupted operation for heavy residue conversion into higher-value petrochemical feedstocks. The dedicated grid interconnection lowers failure risks associated with grid fluctuations, improves operational efficiency, and creates scalable capacity for nearby continuous-process plants requiring high-availability industrial automation and power infrastructure.
