Subsea Infrastructure Development for Offshore Field Production

TechnipFMC subsidiary FMC Wellhead Equipment Sdn. Bhd. entered an agreement with PETRONAS Carigali Sdn. Bhd. to deliver integrated subsea production architecture for the Limbayong deepwater project offshore Malaysia. The technical scope encompasses engineering, procurement, construction, and installation across the entire deepwater production system.

Operational Context and Project Objectives
Developing greenfield offshore fields requires managing extreme hydrostatic pressures, variable reservoir dynamics, and extended delivery cycles. PETRONAS Carigali initiated the Limbayong development under a fast-track operational schedule, requiring accelerated hardware manufacturing and offshore commissioning without compromising structural integrity.

To resolve the schedule and technical integration risks associated with multi-vendor interfaces, the operator contracted TechnipFMC to handle the complete subsea scope under a single execution framework.

Standardized Subsea Architecture and Execution
The deployment relies on a configure-to-order product platform alongside an integrated engineering, procurement, construction, and installation model. TechnipFMC provides standardized modular hardware designed to reduce bespoke component engineering. Key technical characteristics and structural responsibilities include:
  • Hardware standardization: Equipment is configured from pre-qualified components, reducing supply chain lead times and factory acceptance testing duration.
  • Unified interface management: Single-source responsibility eliminates misalignments between subsea wellheads, flowlines, and installation vessels.
  • Mechanical configuration: The modular architecture accommodates specific pressure and flow specifications while utilizing validated assembly processes.
Deployment and System Integration
FMC Wellhead Equipment Sdn. Bhd. manufactures and qualifies the subsea assemblies before maritime transport. Offshore installation vessels handle the deployment, subsea tie-in, and testing phases to integrate the hardware with the seabed infrastructure. Managing both the product manufacturing and subsea installation through a single engineering channel ensures mechanical tolerances and operational interfaces match installation vessel capabilities directly.

Technical Impact and Performance
The combination of modular hardware and single-source installation directly addresses field economics by lowering subsea delivery schedules. Standardized modular blocks eliminate custom manufacturing steps, enabling predictable delivery intervals across the deepwater extraction system.

"Through our integrated approach and Subsea 2.0® CTO platform, we can provide a unique solution focused on improving project economics, accelerating delivery and enhancing project execution for Malaysia’s offshore energy sector," stated Jonathan Landes, President, Subsea at TechnipFMC.

The contract value ranges between $75 million and $250 million, covering hardware supply, logistics, and marine installation operations for the deepwater development.
