TotalEnergies and AMNI Launch Ima Gas Development to Feed Nigeria LNG Train 7

To support expanding liquefied natural gas (LNG) production and harness untapped non-associated gas resources, TotalEnergies (operator, 40%) and partner AMNI (60%) have officially sanctioned the development of the Ima gas field. Straddling offshore licenses OML 112 and 117 in shallow waters near Bonny Island, the project aims to bolster regional energy capacity while aligning with modern low-emission operational standards.

Project Specifications and Technical Scope
The Ima development is engineered for high operational efficiency, low cost, and minimal environmental impact.

Key technical and operational parameters include:
  • Infrastructure: A single simplified offshore platform tied into the Bonny Island infrastructure via a 22 km pipeline.
  • Production Capacity: A targeted plateau of 350 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d) equivalent to over 60,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day with production start-up expected in 2028.
  • Feedgas Contribution: The field will supply roughly one-third of the total gas required for the ongoing Nigeria LNG Train 7 expansion project, which scales plant capacity from 22 million tons per annum (Mtpa) to 30 Mtpa.
  • Emissions Reductions: Designed with zero routine flaring, electric power supplied entirely from shore, and permanent methane detection and monitoring systems.
Local Content and Community Impact
In alignment with Nigerian government incentives for non-associated gas developments, the project heavily prioritizes domestic industrial participation:
  • Contractor Integration: All key project contractors are local Nigerian companies.Offshore Magazine
  • Community Workforce: Approximately 60% of the project's development workforce will be sourced directly from host communities, fostering long-term local economic value.
Leadership Perspectives
“We are very pleased to announce the FID for the Ima gas project, marking a new milestone in the deployment of our integrated gas strategy in Nigeria,” said Nicolas Terraz, President of Exploration & Production at TotalEnergies. “After the Ubeta project sanctioned in 2024 and expected to start-up next year, Ima demonstrates again our ability to unlock new low-cost and low-emissions gas resources, following the incentives introduced by the Nigerian Government for non-associated gas developments.”
