Integrated Gas Compression and Modular Liquefaction Infrastructure

Baker Hughes and Venture Global LNG have expanded their technical partnership to deploy integrated gas compression systems and modular liquefaction equipment for natural gas infrastructure in Louisiana. The engineering agreement covers feed gas pipeline transport via the Cloud Connector Pipeline project and production capacity additions at the Plaquemines LNG terminal.

Industrial Challenge and Operational Scope
Operating large-scale liquefied natural gas export facilities requires continuous, high-volume feed gas transport and scalable liquefaction architectures. To support the Plaquemines LNG expansion, Venture Global LNG required mechanical-drive compression trains capable of maintaining high-throughput pipeline pressures alongside modular refrigeration systems that integrate into existing terminal layouts without disrupting continuous operations.

Technical Solution and Partner Responsibilities
Baker Hughes is responsible for engineering, manufacturing, and supplying the compression and liquefaction machinery, while Venture Global LNG oversees overall pipeline and facility development.

For the Cloud Connector Pipeline, Baker Hughes supplies 13 gas compression systems powered by Frame 5/2E gas turbines. These units transport feed gas directly to the Plaquemines facility, expanding the operator's pipeline compression fleet to 23 Frame 5/2E-driven compressor systems.

For the Plaquemines terminal expansion, the scope includes four modular liquefaction blocks consisting of eight liquefaction modules. The technical architecture for each block comprises:
  • Two electric-motor-driven, single mixed-refrigerant liquefaction modules.
  • Centrifugal compressor trains engineered for continuous refrigeration cycles.
  • Chart cold boxes and dedicated air coolers.
  • Integrated control systems for process monitoring and operational stability.
System Deployment and Operational Impact
The mechanical-drive compressor packages will integrate directly into the Cloud Connector feed gas network to provide reliable, high-pressure pipeline throughput. At the export terminal, the pre-engineered, electric-motor-driven modular blocks interface with auxiliary process utilities to scale LNG production capacity.

The modular single mixed-refrigerant design minimizes on-site installation footprint and reduces commissioning complexity compared to site-built refrigeration systems. In combination, the pipeline compression units and terminal liquefaction trains support Venture Global LNG across more than 100 million metric tons per annum of operational and planned LNG export capacity.
