Electrostatic Separation Technology Integrated into Global Oil Production Systems

SLB has acquired and integrated the Vessel Internal Electrostatic Coalescer technology from Sulzer to enhance oil-water separation efficiency in upstream production systems. This technical integration addresses the growing operational challenges of managing high water volumes in maturing onshore and offshore oilfields.

Addressing Maturing Asset Challenges
As oil reservoirs mature, the proportion of co-produced water increases. This rising water cut degrades the performance of conventional gravity-based separation systems, leading to reduced processing throughput, elevated chemical treatment costs, and increased operational complexity.

To address these challenges, operators require advanced separation methods that can be integrated into existing digital infrastructure and industrial automation workflows without requiring extensive capital expenditure or physical expansion of surface facilities.

Electrostatic Coalescence Mechanism
The acquired technology uses an insulated electrode array installed directly inside the separator vessel. By generating high-frequency electrostatic fields, the system destabilizes water-in-oil emulsions.

The electrical field forces small, dispersed water droplets to polarize, collide, and coalesce into larger droplets that settle rapidly out of the continuous oil phase. This electrostatic process reduces water-in-oil content to below 1% in a single treatment stage, maintaining process stability and oil quality.

System Integration and Deployment
The separation system is engineered for both new installations and retrofits within existing separator vessels, minimizing modifications to physical plant piping. SLB manages the engineering, deployment, and integration of this technology into broader industrial automation platforms.

The technology has been deployed globally in high-water-cut environments across both onshore and offshore production facilities, providing a scalable method to debottleneck surface processing systems and lower overall operating costs.
