Petróleos de Venezuela S.A. (PDVSA) and SLB have entered into a long-term memorandum of understanding to revitalize operations across exploration, field development, and production. The initiative focuses on deploying advanced technical solutions to enhance processing efficiency and stabilize production outputs in mature and heavy crude reservoirs.
Operational challenges and collaborative rationale
The Venezuelan hydrocarbon sector requires significant modernization to optimize mature assets and efficiently extract heavy and extra-heavy crude reserves. Managing these complex reservoirs demands sophisticated reservoir modeling, predictive maintenance, and precise flow assurance.
Because of the scale of the existing digital infrastructure and the geological complexities of the fields, cooperation between the state resource owner and an international technology provider was necessary. The partnership combines PDVSA's localized asset data and infrastructure with SLB's proprietary digital systems and century-long operational experience in the region.
Technical solution and digital transformation
A primary component of the collaboration is the deployment of unified digital infrastructure and industrial automation tools across the production lifecycle.
The technical strategy incorporates:
- Connected Data Ecosystems: Integrating disparate field data into centralized platforms to provide real-time visibility into well performance.
- Predictive Modeling: Utilizing thermodynamic and fluid-behavior simulations to anticipate equipment degradation and optimize artificial lift systems.
- AI-Enabled Workflows: Implementing automated diagnostic algorithms to accelerate operational decision-making and reduce downtime.
Responsibilities are divided based on core competencies. PDVSA manages the physical infrastructure, field access, and primary data collection. SLB provides the software architecture, analytics platforms, and technical integration oversight. Additionally, the framework includes a structured human capital program where SLB collaborates with local academic institutions to train personnel on these new digital workflows and engineering standards.
