TotalEnergies has started production from the Lapa South-West project located in the Santos Basin offshore Brazil, approximately 300 kilometers from the coastline. The project expands production from the existing Lapa oil field by connecting three additional wells to the current floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) facility. The development increases production capacity from the field by about 25,000 barrels of oil per day.

Subsea Wells Connected to Existing FPSO
The Lapa South-West development leverages existing offshore infrastructure at the Lapa field. The new subsea wells are tied back to the field’s FPSO unit, which performs offshore oil processing, storage and transfer operations. Using existing production infrastructure allows operators to expand output while limiting the need for new offshore facilities. This approach typically reduces project costs and shortens development timelines compared with standalone offshore projects.

Offshore Production in the Santos Basin
The Santos Basin is one of Brazil’s most significant offshore oil and gas regions. Located in deep waters along the southeastern coast of the country, it hosts several large offshore production projects. Floating production, storage and offloading vessels are commonly used in these environments. FPSOs process crude oil onboard, store it in the vessel’s hull and transfer it to shuttle tankers for transport to onshore terminals.

Expansion of TotalEnergies’ Brazil Portfolio
The start-up of Lapa South-West forms part of TotalEnergies’ broader expansion strategy in Brazil’s offshore energy sector. The company has been increasing production capacity in the region through multiple projects. In May 2025, the company started production at the Mero-4 offshore development. Additional projects in the Santos Basin, including Atapu-2 and Sépia-2, are scheduled to begin production in 2029. These developments contribute to the company’s objective of increasing overall hydrocarbon production by around 3 percent per year through 2030 while leveraging existing infrastructure where possible.
