In the downstream energy and fuel logistics sector, terminal infrastructure plays a critical role in ensuring supply security and operational stability. PT Pertamina (Persero) has initiated the transformation of its LPG Terminal in Tanjung Sekong, Cilegon, into a Green Terminal, positioning it as a pilot project for low-carbon, ESG-integrated terminal management within Indonesia’s national energy infrastructure.

The Tanjung Sekong LPG Terminal supplies approximately 35–40% of Indonesia’s national LPG demand, making it one of the country’s most strategic downstream assets. With a storage capacity of 98,000 metric tons and a jetty capable of accommodating vessels up to 65,000 DWT, the terminal plays a central role in stabilizing household LPG supply. Its transformation therefore represents a structural shift in how critical energy infrastructure is operated.

Integrated ESG-Based Terminal Management
The Green Terminal concept is not limited to facility certification. It introduces an operational governance framework structured around eight sustainability pillars. These include environmental management systems, operational digitalization, environmentally friendly equipment, circular waste management practices, and structured environmental capacity-building for personnel.

This approach aligns with Pertamina’s Net Zero Emission (NZE) 2060 roadmap, embedding decarbonization directly into core operational infrastructure rather than treating sustainability as an add-on initiative.

According to Pertamina’s Director of Transformation & Business Sustainability, the initiative strengthens both operational resilience and long-term risk management by integrating green technologies and governance improvements into terminal operations.

Green Hydrogen Integration for Scope 2 Emissions Reduction
A key technical development within the Green Terminal initiative is the deployment of a green hydrogen ecosystem. Hydrogen produced from geothermal energy by PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE) in Ulubelu is distributed by PT Elnusa Petrofin and utilized by PT Pertamina Energy Terminal (PET) as a low-carbon electricity source at Tanjung Sekong.

This integrated supply chain is designed to cover up to 25% of the terminal’s operational electricity demand. By partially substituting conventional grid electricity, the system is expected to significantly reduce Scope 2 emissions while mitigating exposure to long-term electricity cost volatility.

For infrastructure operators and energy investors, this model demonstrates how decarbonization can be implemented within high-volume fuel logistics environments without compromising supply reliability.

Operational Efficiency and Risk Mitigation
Beyond emissions reduction, the Green Terminal framework enhances:

Reference Model for Future Infrastructure
The Green Terminal at Tanjung Sekong is intended to serve as a reference framework for upgrading additional terminals within Pertamina’s portfolio. The initiative illustrates how energy infrastructure modernization can integrate low-carbon operations, digital management and renewable energy deployment while maintaining national supply security.

Through this transformation, Pertamina reinforces its strategic objective of achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2060 while strengthening long-term energy resilience and infrastructure sustainability.
