AUTOMA 2025: Driving Digital Transformation in Oil & Gas

The future of the oil and gas industry took centre stage at the Oil and Gas Automation and Digitalisation Congress (AUTOMA), where global leaders explored how digitalisation, AI, and automation are redefining industrial efficiency and sustainability.

Hosted in Amsterdam, AUTOMA 2025 gathered more than 350 professionals from oil and gas companies, EPCs, pipeline operators, refineries, and technology developers. Over 20 hours of networking, 11 sessions, and 288 B2B meetings underscored the event’s growing impact as a catalyst for collaboration and innovation. Supported by regional partners Moeve, Linde plc, Italgas S.p.A., Gizil GmbH, Repsol, and host sponsor Fluor, the congress showcased the industry’s unified push toward a smarter, more sustainable energy ecosystem.

Sustainability and Efficiency in Focus
The opening panel, led by Yuliya Glazyrina, Project Director of AUTOMA, set the tone by emphasizing energy efficiency, carbon reduction, and storage safety. Companies such as Chiyoda Corporation Netherlands B.V., Italgas S.p.A., and Linde plc presented strategies for achieving carbon neutrality.

One standout example came from Hexxcell Ltd., where CEO Francesco Coletti, PhD, demonstrated how Hybrid-AI digital twins—combining physics-based models with AI—can reduce CO₂ emissions by 8% while preventing up to 3% in production losses.

Further sessions explored AI-driven remote monitoring and predictive maintenance. CVA Group, represented by Benoit Gotab, shared insights on optimizing geoscience workflows with AI, while Larsen & Toubro Technology Services highlighted best practices for large-scale digitalisation projects.

Redefining the Digital Energy Landscape
The second day shifted focus to the energy transition and clean hydrogen production. Speakers from Tecnimont SpA, Aramco Overseas Company B.V., Orlen S.A., and Repsol Cartagena Industrial Complex discussed how digitalisation and automation are shaping the path to net zero.

Siemens AG’s Bernd Kalusche detailed the benefits of digital twin integration for emissions reduction, while Saudi Aramco’s Saleh Alhonayan explored digital twins’ role in gas facility operations.

Two keynote sessions offered deep dives into industrial applications: Dennis Rohe from Imubit illustrated AI’s impact on industrial sustainability, and Darren Albers, CISO at Fluor, addressed cybersecurity challenges in EPC environments.

The Road Ahead
By fostering collaboration across oil, gas, and chemical sectors, AUTOMA 2025 reaffirmed its role as a hub for practical innovation. The congress continues to expand its reach with AUTOMA Chem, extending digitalisation dialogues into the chemical industry.

Looking ahead, the Oil and Gas Automation and Digitalisation Congress 2026 will return to Amsterdam on 5–6 October 2026, promising an even stronger focus on real-world automation and digital strategies that drive tangible value for the energy sector.
